It provides a detailed look at the cellular components of a dog’s blood, offering crucial insights into their overall health and helping veterinarians diagnose a wide range of conditions.

What a CBC Measures
A CBC analyzes three main types of blood cells:
Red Blood Cells (RBCs or Erythrocytes): Responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body and transporting carbon dioxide back to the lungs.
White Blood Cells (WBCs or Leukocytes): Essential for the immune system, fighting off infections and inflammation.
Platelets (Thrombocytes): Small cell fragments vital for blood clotting and stopping bleeding.
How a CBC is Performed
Sample Collection: A small blood sample (usually 1-3 ml) is drawn from your dog, typically from the jugular vein in the neck or a cephalic vein in the leg.

Key Components of a CBC and What They Indicate
1. Red Blood Cells (RBCs)
PCV (Packed Cell Volume) / HCT (Hematocrit): This is the percentage of red blood cells in the total blood volume.
Low: Indicates anemia, which can be caused by blood loss (e.g., injury, internal bleeding, parasites), red blood cell destruction (e.g., autoimmune disease), or decreased red blood cell production (e.g., chronic kidney disease, bone marrow issues).
High: Can indicate dehydration (the blood becomes more concentrated) or, less commonly, a rare condition called polycythemia.
RBC Count: The total number of red blood cells.
Hemoglobin (Hgb): The oxygen-carrying protein within red blood cells.
MCV (Mean Corpuscular Volume): The average size of the red blood cells.
Low (Microcytic): Often seen with iron deficiency (e.g., chronic blood loss).
High (Macrocytic): Can indicate regenerative anemia (the body is producing many large, immature red blood cells called reticulocytes) or certain B vitamin deficiencies.
MCH (Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin) / MCHC (Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration): The average amount of hemoglobin per red blood cell and its concentration.
Low (Hypochromic): Often accompanies microcytic cells in iron deficiency.
RDW (Red Cell Distribution Width): Measures the variation in the size of the red blood cells.
High: Indicates anisocytosis (red blood cells are of different sizes), often seen in regenerative anemia.
Reticulocytes (if requested and performed): Immature red blood cells.
High: Indicates regenerative anemia, meaning the bone marrow is actively producing more red blood cells to compensate for loss or destruction. This is a good sign the body is responding.
Low: Indicates non-regenerative anemia, suggesting a problem with red blood cell production in the bone marrow.
2. White Blood Cells (WBCs)
Total WBC Count: The overall number of white blood cells.
High (Leukocytosis): Often indicates infection, inflammation, stress, or certain types of leukemia.
Low (Leukopenia): Can signify severe infection (where WBCs are being used up faster than they’re produced), bone marrow problems, certain viral infections, or drug reactions.
Differential Count: This breaks down the total WBC count into the percentages of the five different types of white blood cells:
Neutrophils: The most common type, “first responders” to bacterial infections and inflammation.
High (Neutrophilia): Bacterial infection, inflammation, stress, some cancers.
Low (Neutropenia): Severe infection, bone marrow suppression, certain viral diseases.
Left Shift: Presence of immature neutrophils (band neutrophils) indicates an acute, active inflammation or infection.
Lymphocytes: Involved in adaptive immunity, fighting viruses and producing antibodies.
High (Lymphocytosis): Chronic infection, some cancers (lymphoma), certain viral diseases.
**Low (Lymphopenia): Stress (cortisol release), acute viral diseases, immune suppression.
Monocytes: “Cleanup crew,” involved in chronic inflammation and removing debris.
High (Monocytosis): Chronic inflammation, stress.
Eosinophils: Associated with allergic reactions and parasitic infections.
High (Eosinophilia): Allergic reactions (fleas, food, environmental), parasitic infections (worms).
Basophils: The least common type, involved in allergic reactions (similar to mast cells).
High (Basophilia): Rare, can indicate severe allergic reactions or some cancers.
3. Platelets
Platelet Count: The total number of platelets.
Low (Thrombocytopenia): Can lead to bleeding issues. Causes include immune-mediated diseases (where the body attacks its own platelets), tick-borne diseases, certain cancers, or bone marrow problems.
High (Thrombocytosis): Less common to cause problems, but can be seen with inflammation, excitement, iron deficiency, or some cancers.
MPV (Mean Platelet Volume): The average size of platelets.
High: Can indicate the bone marrow is producing more, larger, immature platelets to compensate for a low count.
When is a CBC Recommended?
A CBC is a standard part of veterinary diagnostics and is often recommended in many situations:
Routine Wellness Exams: Especially for senior dogs or as part of an annual check-up to establish a baseline and detect developing issues early.
Pre-Surgical Screening: To ensure the dog is healthy enough for anesthesia and surgery, particularly to check for anemia or clotting issues.
Sick Animals: If your dog is showing signs of illness such as lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, loss of appetite, coughing, or difficulty breathing.
Monitoring Chronic Conditions: For dogs with ongoing health problems (e.g., kidney disease, autoimmune disorders) or those on long-term medications that can affect blood cell production.
Suspected Infections or Inflammation: To identify the presence and type of infection or inflammatory response.
Investigating Bleeding or Bruising: If your dog has unexplained bruising, nosebleeds, or blood in their urine/feces.
Interpreting the Results
It’s crucial to remember that a CBC should always be interpreted by a veterinarian in conjunction with:
Your dog’s clinical signs and symptoms.
Their medical history.
Other diagnostic tests (e.g., chemistry panel, urinalysis, imaging).
